AUCTIONS, KILL PENS, AND SLAUGHTER – My Two Cents
The time to “rescue” these unfortunate animals is before they get into this predicament. Don’t create a foal just because you can; a registered horse from a reputable breeder is a bargain at any price. When you see an ad for a horse the owner “must sell”, that is the time to buy it, not after it has been neglected and taken to a kill pen as a last resort.
Buying from an auction or kill pen prolongs the suffering these animals have already endured. There is a time to put them down humanely rather than supporting a business that will squeeze the last ounce of profit from them by praying on kind hearts who will pour thousands of dollars into rehabbing them by begging for donations. Just please stop! A healthy horse with a known history will be much less expensive and safer in the long run.
Regulated horse slaughter in America is kinder than neglect and more humane than trucking sick and injured animals to Mexico and Canada for a painful execution.
